The Interview

What is your role within KDE?

Localize applications to Traditional Chinese Ed.

How and when did you get involved in KDE?

On 2000-2-11, I was a student at Morehead State University. It is a tiny town and I have nothing to do. Therefore, I joined Chinese Linux Documentation Project (http://www.linux.org.tw/CLDP/) and talk with couple of my friends like Seventeen Chen (seventeen@cle.linux.org.tw), Platin (platin@ch.ntu.edu.tw). They tell me that I can also try to translate some PO files. Since there is no running project for translating PO files into Traditional Chinese, I start this project (http://i18n.linux.org.tw). Soon after this, I start to translate PO files in KDE and Gnome.

How much time do you spend on KDE?

Too much, I do not know ^_^

What is your favorite tool? (for developers; what is your favorite editor?)

KBabel.

Is there a process you follow when you code/translate/write documentation?

Just i18n standard with POT/PO files.

What are the problems you encounter while translating?

There is only few active translator in our team and all of us can only use our own free time to do this. Also, there are a lot of PO files someone translated long time ago, and they no longer update it. Therefore, the translation progress is quite slow.

How many people are working on the translations?

There are only around 5 active translators who are working on KDE.

Do you get reactions from the people who use your translations?

Not really.

What was your first computer?

8086.

Which program would you say every KDE user should have?

KControlCenter, of course.

If you could add one personal feature to KDE what would that be?

I have no idea since I can finish most of my work in current KDE.

What application/game would you like to see ported to KDE?

Flight Simulator.

Where do you see yourself and KDE 2 years from now?

For me, I should still be working for my Ph.D. degree at Case Western Reserve University. For KDE, it might be the most popular desktop in personal computer. At this time, people care about the price when they buy a computer. Since KDE is free, and anyone can add any feature they want, people might change their desktop environment to KDE. A specially in Taiwan, the chinese printing with KDE is almost there, it is time to move from MS Office to koffice.

Are you being paid to work for KDE and if yes by who?

No, I just do this because I want to do.

Personal Questions

Where and when were you born?

1975/11/05 in Taipei, Taiwan.

Which University/School did you go to?

National Taiwan University
Morehead State University
Case Western Reserve University

What's your status, are you single and up for adoption?

I'm single, but do have a girlfriend.

If married/girlfriend/partner(m/f), how does he/she cope living with a KDE addict?

She is also a workaholic, so she does not care what I am doing ^_^

Do you have children?

No.

What are the biggest turning points/events in your life?

Might be starting to use Slackware in '93 ^_^ After that, I can use most computer system, not only windows. This gives me more chance to choose what I really want, and the best adopt tool for my work.

What is the nicest thing anyone ever did for you?

There was a traffic accident in 1994. During that bad time, my best friend Seventeen Chen and my girlfriend always stay with me, helping me to get over it.

If your house is on fire what would be the first thing you would grab to take with you?

All of the tape backups. Actually, there were always fire alarms when I lived in Morehead, every time, I only took my tape backups and wallet with me during evacuation.

What are the elements for a perfect vacation?

Free, fast internet connection in hotel ^_^

What are the things you want to have done before you die?

Married my girlfriend

What do you (and your s.o) like to do in your spare time?

Sleeping...

What was the last movie you have seen?

Hollow Man.

What was the last fiction book that your have read?

Hm.. It only has chinese edition, write by Mo, Ren. To translate the book's name into English might be "A Hero in Star War" and "Lost in Star Road".

What song brings back a favorite memory? And why?

Ha...
It would be Jolin Tsai. When I was writing the web page for i18n.linux.org.tw, her MTV's and songs were with me all the time :) Here (http://www.umusic.com.tw/jolin/default.htm) is her official site.

If you could be invisible for 2 hours where would you go and what would you do?

Rob a bank ^_^

You having some friends over for a party and you're allowed to invite 3 famous people who would you invite and why?

Maybe Bill Gates. Maybe we can tell him all good things about Open Source. Also, ask him why Windows is so smart. It always knows when I am in hurry - if I am doing something not really important, it works well. However, when I am doing some critical work, it hangs every time.

The other two might be the president of Taiwan and Mainland China. I just hope we will not fight with each other :(

Did you meet your best friend (no family) virtually or in person?

Sometimes we meet in person, and sometimes meet virtually. Maybe half half...

Did you ever met a fellow KDE'r in person, when and where?

Not yet :(

Name your favorite quote/saying.
